Bitten by the love Bug(-Type).

10. Metapod

Yes, Metapod is pretty useless; unable to do much of anything until it evolves (more on that later). But, as one of the first wild Pokémon encountered in the original games, Metapod has serious nostalgia factor. Plus, it’s sort of cute in a pitiful, gross kind of way.

9. Beedrill

Bees and wasps are scary at the best of times, but at a metre tall and flaunting triple, poisonous stingers, Beedrill really is an insectophobe’s nightmare.

8. Vespiquen

If Beedrill wasn’t scary enough for you, meet the girl of his dreams, Vespiqueen. With the ability to summon a swarm of bees to defend or attack on her behalf, Vespiqueen is one bug you don’t want turning up at your picnic.

7. Parasect

Everyone knows zombies are awesome, and Parasect is essentially a bug-zombie controlled by … a giant mushroom? The apocalypse starts here.

6. Shedinja

When Nincada evolves into Ninjask, the old husk it used to inhabit comes to life as a spooky, insect-like ghost. Shedinja is pretty tough to attack, and its white halo is a satisfyingly eerie touch. Just a shame one hit is all it takes to KO this otherwise awesome ‘mon.

5. Venomoth

Making the top ten purely because of its inclusion in the legendary Twitch Plays Pokémon campaign (it beat Lance’s level 62 Dragonite), a well-trained Venomoth should never be underestimated.

4. Mega Pinsir

Pinsir was always a bit lacklustre; looking cool but never of much use. However, that’s all changed with the inclusion of Mega Pinsir in Pokémon X and Y. Sprouting wings and gaining a hefty stat increase, this Pokémon finally lives up to its ferocious appearance.

3. Heracross

Heracross is a very useful combination of the Bug and Fighting types. It’s powerful, learns some great moves and absolutely loves honey. What’s not to love?

2. Scyther

A seriously cool-looking Pokémon, scyther is fast and, with those razor-sharp blades, very dangerous. It also does a little dance if it want’s to increase its attack power, and probably never has trouble opening crisps.

1. Butterfree

When all that hard graft pays off and Metapod finally evolves, Butterfree is the result. And what a result! Learning powerful psychic attacks and gaining the ability to paralyze, poison or put to sleep, Butterfree is a fantastic addition to any squad. Butterfree was also one of Ash’s first Pokémon in the anime, and, when it left him to be with Pink Butterfree, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
